Ashley the Pet Potbellied pig predicts sizures

THIS IS AMAZING !!! i AM SOOO PROUD OF MY PIGGERS !!! PLEASE FORWARD - IT MIGHT HELP SOMEONE ELSE WITH A DISEASE... March 18, 2005 Hi Vickie, Just wanted to give you an update on our girls. They are doing great. We have had some trips to the vets, but nothing we couldnt over come. Ashley managed to get under a chair and hurt her hips. Restricted area and pain meds helped her through that. Though I must say the x-rays were quite the experience. Both girls have been treated for a "mange" disease. They had small bumps that itched. Which ended up spreading and getting worse. We tried pills but they were not very effective so we went with shots. The girls were both troopers. They never made a sound. Both had a shot every two weeks for 8 weeks. No more bumps and their coats look great. Now for the exciting part. One of the reasons we wanted to get another PBP is to keep my husband company. He has multiple seizures disorders and is home all day. There is nothing like pet therapy. When we were picking out the piggys, I chose Nicole (black), when Lou saw Ashley (grey) he wanted her. So we got both colors although the original plan was to get two black. Ashley has a very special talent. Both of them love to lay with us, on us. They fight over who gets to be the closest to us. Nicole even pushes the pillow out from under his head and becomes "the pillow". Ashley will lay behind Lou and rest her chin just under his. She does a strange bark and stays like that. This is the best part, she only does this when he is going to have a bad seizure. She has been so accurate in telling us when a grand mal is coming on, that the Neurologist has added her photo to his medical file. We are now starting to record her abilities with a palm recorder. They want documentation of her abilities so they will have something to show at the medical presentation. My husbands disease is a very rare condition, he is the only known case. It is caused! by a defect in his DNA. The condition has given him a brain disease (flora body) for which there is no cure. His is rare because instead of a small affected area, his is sprinkled throughout his brain. The only thing left to do is try to control the grand mal seizures. He does not respond to medication well, his system just eats it up and it stops working. Now that Ashley has shown that she knows when a seizure is coming on (he has no warning) he has been given medication that will prevent individual seizures from happening. It is the most exciting news we have had in a long time. At some point there will be a medical journal written on my husbands condition and treatment. Ashley will be part of that. My husband is receiving treatment at Dartmouth-Hitchcock in NH, with Dr. Andermann in Canada, and Dr. Ross in ME. All three Neurologist are in the top of the field. Dr. Ross is amazed at what Ashley is able to ! do. I dont know if there is a away to train PBP to detect seizures or if it is just a natural talent that Ashley has. (Nicole has no clue) Like dogs that are trained. Thought you would be interested in case there is a way to train them. There are many people who could be helped. We are not a religious family, it was just a perfect match that was meant to be. We will keep you updated. It will be some time before anything is in print, but I will make sure you get a copy when it does happen. Thank you so much for all you have done for us. We love both of our babies equally, but Ashley is making history. Sue & Lou Schoenig
