I am hoping to get a pet pot belly pig for a new home I buy in Indianapolis. If I come across an unclear zoning law, I think I may order the packet and get started on stating my case. Do you recommend going through the law first and THEN getting a pig, or should I adopt the pig, and see if the issue arises? Kelly Hannon

My wife and I are in the process of purchasing a new home. It is a priority for us to find a location in central florida which will not give us any problems when it comes to zoning and our beloved mini pig, Peach. So far, it has proved to be very difficult to gain zoning information in Florida. Any suggestions?

Hey! I love this web site!! We have a 10 mo. old pot belly pig named "pig-pig". She is such a joy!! I was wondering about some of the noises she makes...what is she saying? The grunting and barking and some times a faint cry when she cant get up on the sofa by herself. We have learned so much from these pig websites..we look forward to learning about what she is saying!!

Guestbook readers: PLEASE help us keep our baby girl by signing a petition to present to our Town Board of Commissioners. Below is Clovers web address with a link to the petition site on the homepage. We are STILL fighting our case. We have been given until July 10th to move Clover before we start getting fined. Nothing seems to be helping. Our commissioners refuse to even come out and visit Clover. Clovers story is on her page as well. We have ordered Beckys book and are in the process of putting together MORE documentation for board members (who refused to even look at previous documentation submitted). Our next step is to pursue a case against our town (which we have been told is pretty strong). Unfortunately, the up front funds for the attorney are just not available. If anyone has any info pertaining to NC Ordinances being changed please let me know. Our ordinance that was adopted AFTER we purchased Clover says "no swine". Yes, I did say AFTER, but there is no Grandfather clause in this ordinance.

very fun reading these letters. My piggie is such a darling. Shes 9 now. How quickly time has gone. I will be always thankful for the blessing of having a pet pig. Yes, she naps by the fire in the winter and I join her sometimes, snuggling happily with soft snoring in my ear. Thanks for this site. Laura

STLtoday.com print | close Sometimes in politics, pork has a heart to it By Susan Weich ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Friday, Aug. 22 2008 When St. Charles councilmen refused to pardon a pig this week, they may have hurt their citys image more than any potbellied porker could have. True, Sarah the pig is in violation of a long-standing ordinance barring swine in the city limits, but, worse, Sarahs kind seems to have offended the dainty disposition of some officials. Patricia Lang, a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission, said permitting the pig to stay would overshadow the citys recent naming as one of Money Magazines 100 best places to live in America. "You dont want the little P.S., By the way, they allow potbellied pigs," she told reporter Mark Schlinkmann. Councilman Erv Ermeling, who sides with the pig, says the issue is getting blown out of proportion, and I agree. But what else would we expect from city officials who earlier this year cracked down on the supposed rash of bar patrons dancing on table tops? The national media had a lot of fun with the city over that one, and unless city officials reverse their pork prejudice, they are sure to get more mud on their faces. At Tuesdays city meeting, Councilman Dave Beckering added to the silliness by suggesting that giving Sarah a pass would open the door for all sorts of wild beasts. "Whats next? Somebody else comes up here and says I have an orangutan I want to keep?" he asked. "We have to draw the line somewhere." Unfortunately, neither he nor Lang took the time to meet Sarah before asking her to leave town. If they had, they would have found her to be a clean, friendly and smart pig. When I went to see Sarah on Thursday, she was lounging on a deck in the well-kept backyard of her home. She didnt make a sound as I petted her coarse hair. After a few minutes, she warmed up to me a bit and sniffed my feet. Sarah had been living a peaceful existence, away from the media spotlight, until a neighbor complained to authorities last spring. The pigs owners, Christina and Christopher Jones, didnt realize they had violated the law until they received a court summons. The couple should have checked to make sure the pig was legal before they bought her, but they didnt. They pleaded with councilmen to let them keep their pet. Officials proposed an ordinance that would have allowed one potbellied pig per household, but on Tuesday, the vote ended in a 5-5 tie, which means Sarah and her family could be packing their bags and moving to friendlier confines. Ermeling and several others had pleaded for the council to give pigs a chance, but the opponents said they were sticking with their research. "Many of these potbellied pigs, which come from the Southeast Asia area, are two or three generations removed from the jungle," said Beckering. Councilwoman Laurie Feldman added that her Google search of potbellied pigs showed that too many of the pigs are abandoned, and too many people wouldnt give their pigs the proper care. Theresa Williams, director of St. Charles Countys Animal Control, disagrees with their assessments. The county has allowed these domesticated pigs since 1999. "Im not aware of any complaints about pigs being a problem for a neighbor or for not being cared for," Williams said. "Personally, I think they make great pets." Williams said while it is true that potbellied pigs became trendy pets in the 1980s and were abandoned by some owners when the animals got full size, today it isnt a big problem. A separate ordinance that had already been drafted could have insured that the pigs would be regulated the same as cats and dogs for things like standards of care, noise and leash laws. So when it really comes down to it, the only reason for not allowing the pig is the complaint of one neighbor. Ermeling said he had heard from 35 other people, including another neighbor of the Jones family, and all of them want the pig to stay. Besty Schlueter, who lives next door to Sarah, told Ermeling in a letter that Sarah didnt fit the stereotype of a smelly, messy barn animal. "If you call her name, Sarah will wag her tail and come over to see you," Schlueter wrote. "Sarahs no problem. Shes just a really ugly dog that doesnt bark." Ermeling is working with the city attorney on another ordinance that would accommodate Sarah. One option they are looking at is a law that would make pigs legal just on the block where the Jones family lives. "Some of the councilmen just dont understand," he said. "Where all of them live used to be farm ground." Council shoots down legalizing pig ownership By Jordan Wilson ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Wednesday, Aug. 20 2008 ST. CHARLES — Christina Jones potbellied pig is still an outlaw, at least by the St. Charles City Councils standards. The City Council shot down a bill Tuesday night that would have made it legal to own one potbellied pig per household. Current law doesnt allow swine within city limits. The swine debate was brought to the council after one of Jones neighbors anonymously complained about the pig. Jones, 29, a lab technician, received a municipal court summons in May notifying her that her pig, Sarah, was illegal. The bill was slated for vote Aug. 5, but council members wanted to check into surrounding counties and cities laws regarding potbellied pigs. Even though many places allowed pigs to be kept as pets, including St. Peters, St. Louis and St. Charles County, the City Council downed the measure, 5-5. A bill needs six votes to pass. City law calls for a fine of $10 to $250 per day for owning a pig, but the city decided not to enforce the obscure ordinance while the council debated it. Jones said Councilman Erv Ermeling was going to see if the council would be able to take up the issue in another way. Jones said she wasnt sure how long shed be able to keep Sarah or if there would be any consequences. Councilman Michael Weller said he didnt think it would be a big deal to change the ordinance for one family. He didnt foresee the city being overrun with pet pigs. "If the next thing you know we have 10,000 pigs running around the city, then we have a problem," Weller said. "Its nonsense not to be supporting this." Councilman Dave Beckering, one of the most vocal opponents, said his research indicated that pigs werent easily domesticated. "Where do we draw the line?" Beckering asked. "What if someone else says, I have an orangutan Id like to keep?" Jones said her pig is a part of her family. Like a dog, Sarah uses the backyard when nature calls, and the family even uses a harness on occasion to take her for walks. Sarah plays with the family dog and sits on the couch, begging for her owners to pet her. Jones said she invited all members of the City Council to her house to see the pig, but only two council members took her up on the offer. Councilman Richard Veit, who was originally skeptical about the proposal, changed his mind after seeing Sarah, Jones said. Veits support wasnt enough to swing the vote as the majority of the council spoke against the bill. "They talked about research, research, and they sat at their computer," Jones said. "But did you drive down one block and meet her (Sarah)?" jwilson@post-dispatch.com | 636-255-7211

I am proud to be owned by my PBP Spanky. He is 6 months old and my husband and I went to GA to get him. I had a female PBP who died in April of this year, she was 16 years old and she had been part of our family for 11 years. Pru was an outside pig, but Spanky lives inside. He was litter trained in 2 days and already knows quite a few tricks, sit, fetch, he loves to play ball and his favorite treat is Fig (Piggy) Newtons. Pot Bellies are a joy and have such wonderful personalities.

Hi all. Im new to the world of potbellies. My Missy came from a farm where she stayed in a barn with her siblings, 12 of them, Her mother died during birth. She was 6 weeks when I got her and about 7#s, now shes 4 months and about 85#s! She was never socialized and was and still is a screamer. She steals paper of any kind where ever she finds it in the house. She does what I call "The crazy pig", she "barks" while she does this, she runs and jumps and twists around. Its great. She only starts doing that when she wants to play. My husband will get down on the floor with her and they head butt each other. Hell lay down and shell sit on him and scratch her butt on him. When you rub her belly or scatch her rump she falls down and waits for you to do it more. If you dont she grunts at you and looks at you as if to say "YOU STARTED IT NOW FINISH IT!" LOL Recently she went into what I called a "heat" she is only 4 months old. She started attacking my husband and squeaking, drooling and trying to hump him. She drew blood and all. Does anyone know if this is normal? She is not fixed yet. I just found a vet willing to do it after newyears. I just found listed on "craigslist" mini potbellies for sale and I was told That they love companionship and that I should have gotten 2. Does anyone have any info that may help me? Do you think a pbp and a mini pbp would get along? HELP!!! :-) Im alittle long winded I know. Sorry Thanks for reading Cheri

What should I do to get them to warm up to me? They were not treated with love before I got them last month. They were born 8/21/07. I have been interested in these pigs since I first laid eyes on one in 1978. I have always wanted one but have not been in a place where I could have one. I now have a place but work away from home right now, so must still wait, but was very happy to find that I could adopt. I currently have 2 dogs, 9 cats, 1 Guinea pig, 3 dwarf hampsters, 2 standard hampsters, and 3 fish. I can not waite to visit one of the pig sanctuaries to start looking. This is a great site. I have the best Pot Bellie pig named Charlotte. She is 1 1/2 years old and i love here more then anyone knows. My family thinks im nuts! I got her when she was 3 days old from a breeder who didnt want to bottle feed her because her mom pushed her aside and she was the runt. She was so close to death that my vet said he didnt think she would make it. She was in shock and was dehydrated . I got fluids to put under her skin and went home and put it under two to three spots under her skin in her tiny body. I really was thinking she would be dead by morning . I did this every 2 to 3 hours. She came out of this and is a 90 pound pig,. I have taken her to work everyday sence i got her at 3 days old. A recent news report stated that 35 pbps were rescued from dismal conditions. Several of the sows were pregnant. A few days later, 74 piglets were born for a total of 109 pbps. If anyone would like further information or to adopt them, go to < www.longmeadowrescueranch.org >. Click on "Whats New", then click on the story "Here piggy, piggy, piggy". Does anyone know a vet who could help me? We rescued him about 8 years ago and he deserves the very best of care once we know what direction to take. Please let me know or redirect me. Thank you

Good Afternoon, I would like help on changing an old ordinance from 1974 that does not allow pbp in our community. I had a pbp years back and the city made me get rid of her, I was not aware that I could attempt to change the ordinance and am so happy to have found your site. Thank you for all your efforts and help to those of us who love our little friends. Any insight on how to go about this would be greatly appreciated. Have a wonderful day :)

i think people who abandon pigs are stupid. Pigs are so cute and so loving. I am getting one for my 16th birthday, my aunt found a place that protects them and raises them, and i think that people who pretect them and raise them like that should be rewarded for what they do! that is all

my pig jimmy is a year and a half old. He is very obese and I want very badly to put him on a diet but I havent been able to. I didnt know anything about raising a pbp untill I got this computer and read all the information available. I have cut out all the extras and I have got him eating only about 3-4 cups a day . I do wonder about the sleeping habits of a pbp. As Jimmy sleeps in our room and he sleeps 23 hours a day. I assume that that is not normal. He does have access to a quarter of acre which he hasnt used at all this winter.Last summer he slept in the shade and took mud baths. Is he more lazy because it is winter. I know he is lazy but he seems very happy. I am under the assumption that on a diet he is only supposed to consume 1 cup of food a day. That seems cruel. Can he have like canned green beans and low calorie snacks like lettuce. Because I have read that you arent.I hopyou can help us. Karen and Jimm

I am an owner of 2 wonderful potbelly pigs. Penelopy is 9 years old now and Babe is 1 year old. Penelopy has visited Nursing Homes and a church and Babe has visited Handicapped children at school. I live in a small town but have room for them in the yard. They sleep in their own cages in the house and are fun to own. We just recently have a new neighbour that is finding something to complain about. We havent had one complaint in 9 years, now all of a sudden a new neighbour moves in and has to start something. We cut an old tree down the other day and piled it out behind our fence and this neighbour phoned in a complaint to the local police to say we are spreading pig manure behind the fence. This was tree limbs not manure to which I told the police, they phoned back and somehow the story changed quick, to which the police said it was wood. I did explain that I had the pigs and for a long time, I told them about the nursing home and the schools. We do know which neighbour called the police, she pokes her head out the curtain to see what we are up to. We clean up the waste from our pets and dispose of it in the garbage. Any encouraging words from my fellow Potbelly Pig owners? Thanks Linda Young. Mysunshine74@hotmail.com

Hi all. I am a new pet pig mommy of a sweet 10 month old little girl. All has gone well for the 3 weeks we have had her but she keeps biting my toes. HA HA! That is the only time and thing she bites. Can someone tell me why? I love the site. Hopefully I will not have any zoning problems. All my neighbors love our little Penelope. Thank you and God Bless.

Great website. I hope to adopt a pet pig. I am waiting for a phone call from the zoning officer. Their initial response was that pot belly pigs fall under livestock with horses and cows. The person I spoke to didn't want to say no without having the zoning officer look into it further. Wish me Luck Cheryl

Not everyone is able to get outside and walk a pet - pigs don't need that exercise. How many children, adults or other animals have been injured by a potbellied pig vs a dog or a cat? Have you ever been kept awake by a pig late at night because of its squealikng over nothing? It has been my experience over the past six + years that "pig people" are more responsible in raising their animals than most other other animal parents.

We are fellow Levittowners, we saw your car at walmart. We had a pot bellied pig a few years ago when we lived up in Tioga county. We are thinking of getting another one. Do you know if we will have any problems with the township and if not where we could buy one and the approximate cost. We live in Falls Township. Thanks Joe & Sandra Murray
